Property Description

A stone house with a magical view, it is sized about 150sm with its land size being around 600sm. Constructed in the 1930s, it was renovated and fortified with earthquake-proof technology during the 2000s. It is located in a new-building restricted area, due to the proximity to Ancient Messene, the most impressive Greek archaeological site, (less than 150m from the house). Numerous other monuments from different eras are also located in the area. Thus, buying this stone house is a great investment, too. This property develops on 3 levels and features 4 bedrooms, 2 living rooms, 2 kitchens and 3 bathrooms. The property enjoys a serene valley view, with an ancient city included. Sitting on the balconies you can enjoy the spectacular views at your own comfort.  Other features that the property enjoys include an autonomous heating system, garage with 2 parking spots, balconies, wood-fired oven, wood ceilings. Most of the area of Ancient Messene contains the ruins of the large classical city-state of Messene refounded by Epaminondas in 369 BC, after the battle of Leuctra and the first Theban invasion of the Peloponnese. This ancient city was, unlike most others, untouched by the later settlements and has thus been preserved outstandingly. Currently the substantial ruins are a major historical attraction. Much of it has been archaeologically excavated and partly restored or preserved for study and public viewing, as well as for various events. The site was never totally abandoned. The small village of Mavromati occupies what was the upper city around the fountain called klepsydra. Administrative structure and population figures refer primarily to it. Messene was surrounded by a circuit wall 9 km (5.6 mi) long, 7 metres (23 feet) — 9 metres (30 feet) high. It was fortified by 30 square or horseshoe-shaped guard towers (and probably barracks) with doors admitting passage to a protected walkway on top of the wall. The wall was pierced by two main gates flanked by protective structures and rectangular in shape with a lintel of a single, massive beam of limestone. Through the Arcadia Gate to the north ran and still runs the main road north (to Arcadia), currently from Mavromati. As Mavromati is the location of the major spring capture, klepsydra, it was probably the first stop for travellers to the city. From there a road runs over the ridge adjoining Mounts Ithome and Eva to the Laconia Gate, similar to the Arcadia Gate. The wall runs straight up the ridge but does not encompass Mount Eva. Today the next stop on the road is the monastery, Mone Voulkanou, set into the lower southeast flank of Mounts Eva. The medieval Voulkanou monastery, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, is built on top of Mount Ithomi, where it was in antiquity the sanctuary of Zeus Ithomata. The monastery is built really on top of Ithome, on a huge rock, which gives the impression that it is it's foundation, also. The old temple is aisled vaulted basilica-aisle today, after many modifications and has been built upon the site of the Temple of “Ithomata” Zeus once used boulders from it. Southeast of the monastery is the ancient Temple of Zeus Ithomata.
