The 51-hectare tropical montane forest reserve ranges from 1200 to 1500 m in elevation, is mainly forested, and has extensive frontage on Rio Nambillo. The forest is home to over 300 species of birds, many mammals including several endangered species, and many endemic amphibians and reptiles. The reserve boasts remarkable orchids, bromeliads, and a high diversity of trees and other plant species. It is a nature lover's paradise. The region's oldest and largest Andean Cock-of-the-Rock lek is an attraction for bird watchers and nature enthusiasts. The property is bounded by the Rio Nambio to the north, two mountain streams on east and west, and the Mindo-Nambillo Bosque Protector (Forest Protection Area) on the southern and upland boundary. There are more than 15 Km of established hiking trails on the property. A small orchard with fruit trees covers about 0.5 hectares near the house. The cabin is located on a flat and grassy area overlooking the Nambillo River. A long driveway from the main Mindo-Nambillo road provides access to the Reserva las Tangaras property. One must cross a sturdy cable bridge on foot to access the cabin and trails.
