It is situated at the location of the ancient city of Kainou or Kanou, one of the 147 ancient cities of Crete. During the Venetian and Ottoman dominion period it was referred to as Gayna (1301), Caina (1577, 1630), Κayna (1650), Kayna ma´a Kalivya (1670), Kayna (1881). The census of 1650, 1670 found 30 households and that of 1881 found 317 Christian residents. It is said that it is the birthplace of the ancient goddess Vritomartιs, daughter of Zeus and Karmi.
